Long regarded as one of America's most gifted writers, Wright Morris authored over thirty-three books. He was born in Central City, Nebraska, on 6 January 1910. His novel, A Field of Vision, won the National Book Award in 1957, and Plains Song won the 1981 American Book Award for Fiction. In addition to his novels, he is the author of a number of photo-text books, books of criticism, and several collections of short stories. He taught English at San Francisco State College, and he and his wife, Josephine Mary Kantor Morris (1927-2002), made their home in Mill Valley, California. Morris died in April 1998.

Scope and Content: 

The Morris papers include correspondence to his friends, colleagues, editors and publishers, and many other people who admired his published work. The manuscript materials include typescripts, editing galleys, and other documents associated with the publication of his novels, short stories, or criticism. There are also photographs of Morris, though no photograph material created by Morris.

Fiction - 20th century - History and criticism

This series includes letters sent to Morris, the majority written between the 1960s and early 1980s. The majority of correspondence is written by those who wrote to Morris, with occasional replies by Morris. Morris often wrote drafts of letters to send and these may be included along with a copy of the final letter. The letters are from Morris' editors, publishers, academic colleagues, or those who developed an acquaintance with Morris through his writings. The correspondence is arranged alphabetically by publishers or person, topic, or institution that wrote to Morris, then chronologically within each folder.
